I thought yesterday, day 2 of the road trip, would be a pretty uneventful one and not worth a dedicated post on the blog. I was almost right …
The day progressed as planned. Lots of miles covered as we crossed Louisiana and Texas, gaining as much West as we could in one day. And when I was ready to call it the day … surprise, surprise.
It was already dark, and for some reason I decided to skip Amarillo, TX – my original target for the day – and pressed on for another hour until I felt really tired. I ended up at a simple Motel on Route 66, which seemed cool. The property was very simple, and the room even simpler, but that was all I needed to rest for today. So I thought.
When I was ready to go to bed, a medium-sized spider crawled across the room’s floor, barely noticing my presence. I quickly grabbed the plastic fly swatter that was hanging prominently on the wall ( !!! ) and killed it. But the problem was, if there were ONE spider, there could be MORE. I inspected the bed, the bed linen and the pillows carefully, but fell asleep suspicious.
Sure enough, at 2AM I was awaken with the dreaded feeling of something crawling on my foot. I remained still for a couple minutes first trying to confirm whether it was indeed something (check) and second trying to infer what kind of insect it could be per the movements it was making. It was then that I remembered – the spider! And at that moment, the thing started to crawl up my leg.
To cut the story short, it was a “normal” bug, quite big, but at least not a spider – a positive outcome, in that sense. I killed it with the swatter again, and spent the rest of the night half awaken, periodically watching for other bugs (needless to say, I second bug tried to crawl up the bed one hour later, and luckily I spotted – and killed – it before it reached me again).
Well, that’s my little story for yesterday. The hotel I chose for today looks much nicer, that I can assure you ☺
